STILES, John

No. 1477062, Gunner, John STILES

218 Battery, 55 (Suffolk Yeomanry) Anti Tank Regiment, Royal Artillery
Killed in Action
on Thursday, 8th February 1945
Aged 42

John Stiles was born in 1902, son of George and Kate STILES (née ALDER or PIKE) of Alton, Hampshire.
Strangely in the 1911 census, George & Kate STILES are there in Hope Cottage, Church Street, Alton, but their son, born 1902 is Reginald George Edward STILES.

John Stiles was killed when a V2 rocket hit the officers mess in Deest ( a few miles NW of Nijmegen). One of the other two men killed was Viscount Elveden (presumably John was his batman) who is named with him on the Elveden WW2 memorial plaque in the Elveden Church.
